We felt like we were all a part of her family, offering prayer for her and other support. We sent cards, made visits, sent emails to her teenaged boys and delivered food through all stages of her illness. We respected her privacy when needed but the family knew our support was there. Unfortunately, a cure was not found. Through this experience we learned that prayer is not always answered in the manner we wish, but just like our congregation God is always there with comfort and love. We also followed her wishes and took part in Teal for the Cure walks collecting monies in hope of a cure in the future.
What is God calling your church to do/become over the next few years? We will persevere while continuing to be a beacon of light in our community. Using this page, and one additional page if needed, write a statement that will help a candidate better understand the relationship of clergy and lay leadership in the life of your congregation. Candidates will be interested to know whether your lay leaders have a history of strong, cooperative relationships with the church’s pastoral leadership. If your church organizational structure is based on intentional lay-led ministries, describe how that structure functions in relationship to the pastor; if your organizational structure is dependent on clergy leadership, describe what will be expected of the pastor.
If you wish, this statement can provide an opportunity for you to elaborate on the list of committees/boards/groups that you identified in Question 24. (For example, in some churches the expectation is for mutual involvement of pastor and finance committee in the financial matters of the church; other congregations have a clear expectation that the pastor will be focused on “spiritual matters” and will be excluded from settings where financial decisions are made.)
Include in the statement reflections on leadership styles that work well for your church. What do you hope/expect that your new pastor will understand and value in your particular style of lay leadership?
What would a new pastor need to know in order to work smoothly with your established leaders? If yours is a multiple-staff church, it would be helpful to comment on your expectations of how the staff team members relate to each other. You are encouraged to include anything else you want to say about your church and its expectations of the leader it now seeks:
Statement on Leadership in Ministry We all have responsibility for being the ministers of the church. Lay leadership is important as a calling before God. The minister is invited to participate in all bodies of the church. His or her input is valued, expected and respected. The lay leaders of our church have had a long history of amicable, strong, and cooperative relationships with the church’s pastoral leaders over the years. Some committees, boards, and groups would require more participation of the minister than others:
a. Diaconate - Pastor’s guidance and leadership welcomed and expected. b. Trustees – Pastor’s opinion welcomed and considered but not always needed since financial decisions are prayfully fulfilled by elected chairperson and elected/appointed lay members of the board. c. Church Council – Pastor’s attendance at meetings needed with guidance welcomed with meeting led by an appointed/elected lay leader. d. Christian Education – Pastor’s guidance and leadership always welcomed by lay members of committee. e. All other groups, including temporary committees – Pastor’s guidance is welcomed but not expected.
We prefer a traditional style of leadership that is open to new and innovative ministry in the life of the church. Many of our lay leaders have been members of our congregation for many years and have served in a variety of positions. They are almost always supportive of each other.
Job Description
The Preble Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) seeks spiritual leadership from a pastor who enjoys sharing his/her faith as an effective preacher every Sunday. As members of this congregation, we recognize the need for us to be willing participants in worship services. Therefore, we act as readers, greeters, giving the children’s word, singing in the choir, providing refreshments for fellowship time, and doing whatever is needed to assist in a meaningful worship service.
We need a minister who shows compassion and sensitivity to individuals in need. As a congregation we function as a family of faith sharing in the concerns of others as well as their joys. We engage in and encourage our pastor to provide visitation to individuals with health issues or to those facing a crisis situation.
We would appreciate someone willing and able to work effectively with committees and individuals of all ages. Our membership is a patchwork of all ages coming together for worship and fellowship. Some members of our congregation live within walking distance of the church building while others travel many miles to share in the story of God’s love. We need someone who encourages our faith and shares in the task of encouraging inactive members once again to be part of our faith community.
As a congregation we are willing to share God’s love through ministries of music, service, and mission while also enjoying fellowship. Our congregation appreciates hearing the messages and gaining additional insight of the words contained in the Bible. Sunday morning Bible study has been well attended in the past. We extend our caring beyond the church walls, out into our local community and beyond. We want a pastor who works hand in hand with our congregation to encourage spiritual growth for our church as a whole while engaging in outreach and mission.
