Music plays a vital role in a worship service providing
inspiration and “telling the story of Jesus”. Early in 1993, the Preble Congregational
Church was blessed to have Dr. Stephen B. Wilson join us as our organist and choir
director. Dr. Wilson graduated from Ball
State University
with a doctorate in conducting in 1983, and has been Professor of Music at SUNY
Cortland since 1985, having served one three-year term as chair of the
Department of Music. His talent and
dedication speaks to the members of the congregation in the beautiful music
that tells of God’s glory.
Since, Preble is a comparatively small church there is a
limited availability of strong voices to sing in the choir. Therefore the group
has always been limited in numbers but the singers are very committed to
serving the congregation faithfully. Dr.
Wilson has brought unlimited patience, talent, and dedication to the task of
directing. These traits allow him to bring out the best in each individual
singer.
The sanctuary contains a sound system of pulpit microphone
as well as cordless microphones, a set of chimes recently refurbished, a grand
piano, and a relatively new Allen Digital Organ and aYamaha Clavinova with an
external Orchestra Disc Module that is used for accompaniment purposes. Dr. Wilson humbly credits the instrument and the
resonant acoustics of the sanctuary for the beauty of the music.
Talented members of our congregation also provide beautiful
instrumental and vocal solos on occasion such as a recent flute solo. Our
church also takes advantage of talented individuals in the county such as the
Homer Brass group who plays here at least once per year. A member of our congregation plays an instrument in that
group. Former members who have relocated also return at times to share their
musical talents once again with our congregation.
As one can see and hear at Preble we have the ability and
talent needed to make a joyful noise unto the Lord every Sunday. Please join
us!!!!!
